Monologue for the lowest and highest points in the room 2014
This is a work whose intention is to reveal the gap between a work and its intention.
This piece was comprised/created of/from both found and composed material. I collected declarations and statements of ambition and intention from interviews, articles, press material, and advertising over several months. Sources ranged from Kanye West and Miley Cyrus to CEO's, artists, writers, curators, composers, real estate developers, among others. I then added in similar statements from my own notebooks, and proceeded to recompose and rewrite the found material, thus blurring the line between what I had written and what I had appropriated. Every act of writing is filled with the echoes of things read, overheard, or remembered. Every act of appropriation is a selection that is indicative of a decision.
The resulting text was handed over to the actress Jennifer Grace, who was asked to read it while varying her tone and delivery, as she saw fit, in relation to or at a disconnect from the material.
