La variation continue
Silent color video, 160 min.
2013
An actress (Catherine Mongodin) is filmed being made up over a period of 2 1/2 hours, the makeup artist applying 7 different color schemes to her face, each representative of a different range in the color spectrum. The coloration of her face continually varies, but never settles. The phrase “variation continue” was used by the philosopher Gilles Deleuze to conceptualize something that evades representation (that evades the stability of form that representation requires) by engaging in a continuous self-differentiation, a continuous flux of variation, similar to the way one color fades into the next in a rainbow.
